! Native Americans There were settlements in the Bay as early as the 11th century BC, made up of hunters and gatherers who enjoyed a rich diet of seeds, shellfish, and game. Historians group these peoples into the Coast Miwok, the montague on the garden the Wintun, and the Ohlone.

Japantown The Japan Center was built as part of an ambitious 1960s plan to revitalize the Fillmore District. Blocks of aging Victorians were demolished and replaced by the Geary Express way and this Japanese-style shopping complex, with a five- tiered, 75-ft (22-m) Peace Pagoda at its heart. Taiko drummers perform here during the Cherry Blossom Festival each April (see p74). The extensive malls are lined with authentic Japanese the montague on the garden shops and restaurants, plus an eight-screen cinema, and the Kabuki Springs and Spa. More shops and restaurants are found along the outdoor mall across Post Street. This neighborhood has been the focus of the Japanese community for some 75 years. d Map F3

Steps of Rome One of the many Italian caf s often full of real Italians lined up along this stretch of Columbus. This one features large windows, usually open, with clientele spilling out onto the sidewalk to eye the stream of passers-by. Good coffee and desserts make it an appealing pit stop until closing time at 2am. d 348 Columbus Ave between Broadway & Vallejo Map M4 (415) 397-0435
