Joshua Abraham Norton Born in 1819, Norton made his fortune in San Francisco but lost it all in 1852. The event left him unhinged but harmless, and he declared vanzare vile himself Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. He issued his own money, and was lovingly indulged by the city s populace until his death in 1880.
^Armistead Maupin Maupin s Tales of the City were serialized in the San Francisco Chronicle before being published in book form. They are lighthearted paeans to the idio syncrasies of gay San Francisco in the 1970s, before the specter of AIDS changed everything.
